Prepare Your Asphalt for the Upcoming Season
As we make our way into the final month of winter, it’s time to start considering what needs to be done to prepare for the coming spring. And besides your usual “spring cleaning,” it’s important to consider the state of your asphalt or pavement. Throughout winter, your parking lots and driveways can take quite the beating from ice, snow and salt. Thankfully, Hoerr’s Blacktop & Sealcoating knows precisely how to prepare your asphalt for the upcoming season. Here’s some of what you can do (and we can assist with) once spring has finally sprung:
Visually Check Your Asphalt
After the snow has melted, go out onto your street, lot or driveway and inspect the state of your asphalt. Take note of any cracks, potholes or crumbling portions you may discover. Not only are these signs your asphalt might need repair, but they can cause problems for vehicles or individuals passing over these areas. After identifying problem spots, reach out to Hoerr’s for our asphalt repair service.
Remove Weeds
While it might not seem like a significant issue, weed growth around or in your asphalt can severely affect its structural integrity. Weeds’ roots can reach deep into cracks and seams, pulling apart asphalt and causing further cracking and deterioration. Taking a weed killer to areas of growth is the first step towards fixing potentially problematic spots on your pavement.
Complete Repair Work
Whether small cracks or large potholes, leaving these areas of your pavement unchecked can lead to more significant repairs down the line. Worst case scenario, you might have to replace entire sections of your pavement! Thankfully, Hoerr’s is well versed in asphalt repair. We can seal cracks, fill holes, and prevent further deterioration of your pavement.
Sweep and Clean
There’s likely a significant amount of dirt, salt and other debris left from winter. And the longer debris stays on your asphalt, the quicker its surface can begin to crack and deteriorate. If able, sweep off the areas where the most buildup of debris has occurred, and rinse away anything left behind.
Apply Protection
If you genuinely want to extend the lifespan of your pavement, applying sealcoating is an absolute must. When sealcoating, a liquid-based acrylic is applied to the asphalt surface. This layer of protection helps block UV rays, damaging chemicals, moisture, and more. Once applied to your asphalt, you can expect it to provide maximum protection for up to two years, at which point it comes time to apply sealcoating again. After having repairs done to your pavement and ensuring it’s free of debris, Hoerr’s can assist with the application of sealcoating.
Touch Up Existing Markings
This next task is related to businesses and their upkeep of parking lots and roadways. After a time, sun, rain, snow, and chemicals can wear down the striping and markings on your pavement. However, with a fresh coat of paint over existing markings, you can quickly brighten up your asphalt to look like new. And with Hoerr’s, we possess the equipment to make painting go quickly while helping your striping and markings last significantly longer.
Continued Clean-Up
As long as weather permits, continual clean-up of your pavement will also increase its longevity. Not to mention, a parking lot or driveway free of rocks, leaves and other debris will add to your property’s overall curb appeal and ensure your pavement is safe to traverse for vehicles and individuals.
